Paris Saint-Germain hitman Lionel Messi could make a sensational return back to FC Barcelona in 2023 after Xavi's appointment as manager by the club.

Barcelona had to let Messi leave amid their financial turmoil and La Liga's financial regulations despite agreeing to take a 50% pay cut in order to stay at the club.

Messi has signed a two year deal with PSG with an option to extend it by another year. However, Barcelona are confident that Messi could be coaxed into a return back to Camp Nou when his contract expires in 2023.

As reported by Marca, the appointment of club legend Xavi could prove to be key in Messi making his decision to return back to the club where he grew into a legend.

Xavi played alongside and won many trophies with Messi at Barcelona and Marca adds that the 41-year-old coach could persuade Messi to join him at the club where they both grew up.

Meanwhile, Victor Font, who lost to Joan Laporta in the Barcelona presidential race has urged the club to re-sign Messi after the World Cup next year.

“His departure deserved to be through the front door,” he told RAC 1.

“From that moment on, the club should be thinking about how Messi could return to Barcelona in 2023.”

Meanwhile, Messi has already expressed his desire to one day return back to the city of Barcelona and would love to be a 'technical director' at Camp Nou.

“What is almost confirmed is that we are going to live in Barcelona again and that our life will be there,” he told Sport.

“It's what my wife wants and what I want. I don't know when my contract with PSG ends but we'll go back to Barcelona to live.

“I always said that I would love to be able to help the club. I would love to be a technical director at some point. I don't know if it will be at Barcelona or not.

“If there is a possibility, I would like to contribute again because it's the club that I love and I would love for it to continue doing well, to continue growing and to continue being one of the best in the world.”
