Legendary Spain and Barcelona midfielder, Xavi Hernandez has once again given his view on the contract situation of his former team-mate, Lionel Messi - considering that the Argentinian is now a free agent.

There has been speculation surrounding the future of Messi considering that his current contract with Barcelona expired on July 1, and that the player is yet to sign a new contract with them amid interest from the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Xavi who played alongside Messi from 2004/05 when he broke into the Barcelona senior squad to 2015 when he left the club, believes that the 34-year-old will sign a new contract with the Catalan giants and see out his professional career with them.

"We have to wait. I imagine he’s talking to the club and the president. I wish Leo the best, as a friend of his and as a cule. I want him to continue at Barcelona, and hopefully it will be announced as soon as possible," he told Mundo Deportivo.

“If I had to bet, I’d say that he’ll continue at the club, although in football we’ve seen many things. But I’d say he’ll continue. Leo needs Barcelona and Barcelona needs Leo. He’s happy in Barcelona; he’s been there all his life. I’d bet that he’ll renew.”

Messi who is currently on international duty with Argentina at the 2021 Copa America is yet to open up on his future plans, instead deciding to concentrate on winning his first major trophy with the national team.
