Leandro Paredes has admitted he is disappointed Lionel Messi's transfer to Paris Saint-Germain did not go through and added that a deal for his Argentine team-mate was a "dream".

Messi handed a transfer request last summer and was linked with an exit from Barcelona for the longest time. PSG and Manchester City were touted as the most likely destinations for the 34-year-old, who officially became a free agent last month.

However, recent reports have claimed that Barcelona are close to re-signing their captain on another long-term deal, and Paredes has expressed his disappointment at not being able to link up with his fellow countryman after winning the 2020 Copa America earlier this month.

“Yes, there was a lot of talk at the club when it emerged that Leo could come to Paris," the PSG midfielder told ESPN. "It was a dream to imagine he could be with us next season. But hey, that didn't happen. I hope he likes where he plays."

PSG were extremely keen to sign Messi this summer and publicly confirmed their interest in the striker. Former Barca star Neymar also admitted it would be great to reunite with the six-time Ballon d'Or winner at Parc des Princes in December, while Paredes said that the club would welcome him "with open arms".

Barcelona are currently trying to put together funds to offer Messi a new contract as they struggle to reduce their overall wage bill in accordance with LaLiga restrictions. Messi has reportedly agreed to take a 50 percent wage cut and is expected to sign a new deal at Camp Nou until 2026.
