Inter Milan striker, Lautaro Martinez has opened up on winning the 2021 Copa America title with Argentina icon, Lionel Messi and what it meant for the record seven-time Ballon d'Or award winner to net his first major honour for his country.

Messi notched a total of nine goal contributions to win the Player of the Tournament and speaking to Inter TV, Martinez revealed that it was "our dream and Messi’s dream as well".

“It was our dream and Messi’s dream as well. He’s been playing with the national team for a long time and it was unforgettable to lift the cup at the Maracana. It was an important target and we achieved it with a team spirit and with Messi, who is our leader," he said.

“He is the best player in the world, he has won the Ballon d’Or seven times and that says it all. I believe that Copa America was very important for him to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Martinez for his part has emerged as one of the best young strikers in the world and played a key role in Inter winning their first Serie A title in a decade last season, by scoring 17 goals in the league. Overall, the 24-year-old has netted 61 goals in 161 games for the Serie A side while also scoring 19 goals in 37 appearances for his national team.
