Messi will leave Camp Nou this summer after Barcelona were unable to renew his deal due to La Liga's new financial regulations.
The legendary Argentine has now been heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain as it has been reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano that the French side is in direct talks with Messi.
As millions of fans and some of the biggest personalities in the world of football reacted to Messi's departure yesterday, there was Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema too who couldn't resist sharing his reaction to the blockbuster news.
Benzema took to Instagram and posted a story with an image from Martin Scorsese's critically acclaimed Goodfellas.
The scene shows a young Henry Hill running away from an explosion that happened because of him.
As part of their club statement regarding Messi's departure, Barcelona stated, "Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of Spanish La Liga regulations on player registration.
"As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
"FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life."
It remains to be seen where Messi eventually ends up, but as of now, it looks like Paris Saint-Germain is his only possible destination, considering talks have begun between the player and the French club.
