One of the biggest transfers in football history took place on Tuesday when Paris Saint-Germain announced that they had signed Argentina icon, Lionel Messi on a two-year deal with an option to extend it by another year.

Messi left Barcelona after 21 years after the club management announced that they would not be able to offer the 34-year-old a new contract despite the player agreeing to take a 50 percent pay cut in order to seal the deal.

Lille defender, Jose Fonte while hailing the arrival of the record six-time Ballon d'Or award winner to France, told talkSPORT that he jokingly messaged his Portugal team-mate, Cristiano Ronaldo about joining him to combat the strength and might of PSG.

"I feel great. I feel great because it's incredible to hear a player like Lionel Messi is in French football in our league. It's exciting. Obviously in terms of competitors it's going to be even harder for us but we're up for a challenge - I'm texting Cristiano to come to Lille every day! He's only replied 'ha ha ha.'"

"Imagine if we keep a clean sheet against them [Messi, Neymar and Mbappe]! It will just value us even more even if we do it. Incredible front three. Are they going to defend? I don't know. It will be interesting to see the competitiveness of the league this year.

"I want to touch on another aspect though. I just want to understand the Financial Fair Play in France. Every single club is restricting their spending. They can't buy a lot, they can't get players on big wages but then PSG comes and it looks like there's no law."

Messi's signing automatically makes PSG the favourites to win their maiden Champions League this season, and it will be interesting to see what impact he has on the fortunes of the club in the foreseeable future.
