Joan Laporta reportedly tried to convince Pep Guardiola to return to Barcelona ahead of the 2021-22 season.

The Catalans had a difficult campaign last term which saw them finish third on the LaLiga table, and get knocked out of the Champions League in the last-16 at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

Doubts were raised over Ronald Koeman's future at Camp Nou after his side dropped out of the title race last season, and according to Esport3's programme Onze, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Laporta has already begun to think about life after Koeman.

The Barca president reached out to Manchester City boss Guardiola in an attempt to lure him back to Spain, however, the Spaniard refused, and instead congratulated Laporta on giving Koeman another chance to prove himself in a season not marred by difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The report adds that Guardiola also advised Laporta to consider re-appointing Luis Enrique at the end of Koeman's tenure. Enrique previously managed Barcelona between 2014 and 2017, and won won two LaLiga titles, one Champions League, one FIFA Club World Cup, and three Copa del Rey trophies.

Enrique is now managing Spain's national team, and just guided his country into the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 following their thrilling victory over Croatia.
