Lionel Messi penned a heartfelt message on Instagram after he matched Xavi Hernandez's all-time appearance record for FC Barcelona.
Messi started for Barcelona against Huesca in La Liga last night and it was the Argentine's 767th appearance for the Catalan outfit. He, in the process, equalled club legend and former teammate Xavi's tally of match appearances for the Blaugrana.
Messi made the occasion memorable by scoring two wonderful goals as Barcelona brushed aside Huesca 4-1 to move within four points of league leaders Atletico Madrid, who have 63 points from 27 games.
Messi took to Instagram to state it's "a great honour" for him to match the Barcelona appearance record and thanked his teammates, family and friends. "It's a great honour to reach this number of games played with Barcelona," the 33-year-old wrote.
"Thanks to all my teammates who have accompanied me over the years, and to my family and friends for always being by my side."
Meanwhile, the newly-elected Barcelona president Joan Laporta congratulated Messi for achieving the feat. "Today Leo Messi has played 767 games wearing Barcelona's shirt, as Xavi did too," Laporta posted on Twitter. "Always with pride, courage and strength. Congratulations, Leo! Let's keep adding more and more."
