The 2021/22 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) is set to start soon with the competition scheduled to kick-off on 19 November, with ATK Mohun Bagan taking on Kerala Blasters FC in the opener.

NorthEast United FC come into this edition after reaching the semi-final stage last season, with the Highlanders progressing to the play-off stage - which was their best ever league standing before they crashed to eventual winners, Mumbai City FC.

Khalid Jamil who took over as interim boss midway last season made the club into a formidable unit, helping them win six games and draw four in his 11 games, with his performances leading them to appoint him as manager on a permanent basis.

NorthEast United FC will look to do one better this time around and here, we take a look at the six foreigners who are part of their side for the upcoming season.

1) Federico Gallego (AM)

Federico Gallego initially was signed on loan from Boston River in 2018, but his performances ensured that the club soon made sure that he was part of their squad permanently, with the Uruguayan establishing himself as a key player for the Highlanders.

The 31-year-old is brilliant on the ball and has a tendency to chip in with important goals, something which the club will look for him to do this season too.

2) Khassa Camara (DM)

Born in France, Khassa Camara has played for the likes of Troyes and Boulogne in the past, and proved to be an indispensable part of NorthEast's midfield last season. The 29-year-old ranks as one of the best defensive midfielders in the league and he will be key if Khalid Jamil's side are to make a dent this season.

3) Hernan Santana (CM)

It came as a surprise to many that Mumbai City FC decided to let go of Hernan Santana, considering that he was impressive for them last season and their loss has been NorthEast United's gain as they have got a player who is brilliant on the ball.

The 31-year-old has vast experience and he will give their midfield that extra that is needed in tight situations.

4) Mathias Coureur (ST)

Mathias Coureur has played in a number of different leagues around the world so far in his career and while he is not known to be extremely prolific in front of goal, he does have the ability to score when needed.

The 33-year-old who joined the club this season, has won the Bulgarian club in the past and will look to lead his new side to the title this season.

5) Patrick Flottmann (CB)

A centre-back who has played for the Australia Under-20 side in the past, Patrick Flottmann has spent his entire career in Australia and this will be the first time that he would be playing in a foreign league.

While he is not an unknown quantity, it will be interesting to see how he performs in different surroundings.

6) Deshorn Brown (ST)

Deshorn Brown has experience of playing in the ISL, having represented Bengaluru FC in the past, for whom he netted seven goals in just 11 appearances. The striker who has also represented Jamaica, will be expected to spearhead the attack and could be the gamechanger for the club this season.
