SC East Bengal come into this years edition on the back of issues relating to their ownership structure but that was resolved and will look to make a mark after struggling in the competition in their debut season.
The Kolkata giants finished in a dismal ninth place last season and hired a new manager in Jose Manuel Diaz. Here, we take a look at the six foreigners who are part of their side for the upcoming edition.
1) Amir Dervisevic (CM)
A midfielder with vast experience in Slovenia, Amir Dervisevic was signed by the club earlier in the summer on a one-year deal, with the option of extending it by another year. While a lot is not known about the 29-year-old, he will definitely add experience to the midfield, considering that he has played for his national team in the past.
2) Darren Sidoel (DM)
Another new signing made by the club, Darren Sidoel has played in leagues in Netherlands, England, Belgium, Bulgaria and Spain in the past, with the defensive midfielder also playing at the youth level for Ajax.
A defensive midfielder by trade, Sidoel is only 23-years-old and it will be interesting to see whether he can become the midfield lynchpin of the side.
3) Antonio Perosevic (ST)
East Bengal signed Antonio Perosevic in order to give them more options in attack, and it was an interesting signing considering that the Croatian is not known for being extremely prolific in front of goal.
The 29-year-old though has good hold up play and has played for Croatia in the past.
4) Daniel Chima Chukwu (ST)
A well travelled striker who will add firepower to the squad, Daniel Chima Chukwu is primarily known for his time at Molde, for whom he scored 31 goals in his four year spell with them. The Nigerian has also played in the Chinese Super League and will be looked up to score goals for the club and help them challenge for the title this season.
5) Franjo Prce (CB)
Franjo Prce has vast top-flight experience as the centre-back was on the books of Lazio in the Serie A for three seasons between 2014 to 2017, though he was often sent out on loan and could not break into the first XI.
The Croatian who has also played for Brescia in the past, will add the much needed steel to the defence come this season.
6) Tomislav Mrcela (CB)
Tomislav Mrcela is another player with vast experience who was signed in order to add the much needed toughness at the back, with the 31-year-old known for his good displays for Perth Glory in the Australian A-League between 2018 to 2020.
Mrcela who is eligible to play for either Croatia or Australia, was called up by Australia for their senior team for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in the past.
