Lionel Messi is enthusiastic at FC Barcelona and the Argentine is in the best place, according to his former team-mate Carles Puyol.
Messi's contract with Barcelona is up this summer, and there has been a lot of speculation surrounding his future. He has been linked with a move away from the Catalan outfit at the end of the season, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain among clubs mooted as his potential destination.
The 33-year-old, however, has not revealed a decision on his future yet, and is unlikely to announce one before the end of the season.
Puyol, who has played alongside Messi at Barcelona, sees the six-time Ballon d'Or winner well and enthusiastic at Blaugrana. The 42-year-old believes Messi is in the best place, but he also stated 'we have to understand and respect the decision' the Barcelona captain makes.
"I spoke to him recently, when he equalled Xavi [Hernandez's appearance record]," Puyol told RAC 1 as quoted by Marca. "I see him well and with enthusiasm, I think he's in the best place.
"But each individual decides what they want and we have to understand and respect the decision he makes."
Puyol also believes Ronald Koeman is doing a 'good job' at Camp Nou. "From the outside it seems as though the players are happy with Koeman," he said. "He's a legend of the club.
"He's doing a good job and he deserves respect and trust. Then, at the end of the season, an assessment will be made."
