Former Paris Saint-Germain star, Jerome Rothen has become the latest pundit to hit out at Argentina icon, Lionel Messi for his poor performance during their 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 second leg on Wednesday.

PSG suffered yet another elimination in the knockout stages of the Champions League on Wednesday, with the Ligue 1 side going on to lose the tie despite leading the two-legged tie 2-0 on aggregate.

“I’m ashamed to talk about Messi like that, but it’s the reality! Yesterday he walked on the pitch. He made efforts from 10 meters! Modric put it in his pocket!. The other – it annoys me so much to mention his name – he lost all his balls! Since he’s been there, it’s been a mess! He has played less than 50% of PSG matches, and when he’s here, we’re going to find excuses for him by saying that he was coming back from an injury? No, there’s no time; it was last night that you had to be there," Rothen said to RMC Sport.

The 34-year-old has failed to recapture the form that made him the best player in the world, managing to score only seven goals in 25 appearances in all competitions - though he has been better in a playmaking role, registering 11 assists so far.
