England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted that Harry Maguire's chances of featuring at Euro 2020 remain "impossible to predict", but added that the defender is "recovering well".

The Manchester United captain has not played since suffering an ankle ligament injury in May, but was included in Southgate's 26-man squad for the European championship. He is yet to return to full training, and the Three Lions' boss admitted there is a chance Maguire might not play any role this summer.

"With any injury, it's impossible to predict 100 per cent," Southgate said ahead of England's final warm-up game with Romania. Our medical team are pleased with his progress, and particularly over the last couple of days. We know there is always that risk, but all of the guide is that he should be available, and it's a case of when he can slot back into training with the group and how quickly we can progress him.

"But of course there is always that risk with any injury that you only have to have one minor setback, and two or three days here and there really affects those timelines. So I'm very realistic about that. We've picked a squad on the basis that if we didn't have him, we've got the players to come in, and if he's able to be fit and available, then that's a bonus for us."

Southgate was also questioned about his decision to take Maguire and Jordan Henderson to the tournament, despite their injuries, and added: "No, because normally we’d only have 23 and we’ve got three additional players.

“We’re realistic about what might be possible for those guys, we’re not picking them with anything in mind other than it will be a bonus if we get them for the games we think we might. Therefore, we’re covered in those positions and balanced the squad out in case we don’t have them.

“Their leadership, influence and possibility we can have them with us we feel was a big factor for the group. We’ve got a lot of young players, so to have two experienced players, two captains of their club, was a very important thing for us.”
