Fernando Santos has insisted Cristiano Ronaldo will remain Portugal captain despite his outburst against Serbia in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers.
Ronaldo threw his armband on the ground in rage and stormed off the pitch even before the referee blew the final whistle after he had been denied a stoppage-time goal despite the ball crossing the line, which would have sealed a win for the Seleção in the game which ended 2-2.
Many criticised Ronaldo over his angry reaction, including former Portugal international Fernando Meira, who said the national team captain's reaction was 'normal but unacceptable'.
However, Portugal coach Santos has insisted Ronaldo will not lose his armband and stated the 36-year-old will keep it 'forever'. "Yes, he will keep the armband. Forever," said Santos [via Sky Sports]. "Cristiano (Ronaldo) is a national example.
"If he had offended the manager, his team-mates or the federation in a thoughtless attitude, then we would have to address the situation. But nothing like that happened.
"It was a moment of huge frustration. And we are talking about a player who is unbeatable when it comes to his eagerness to win.
"Nobody will say now that his reaction was beautiful, but there's no point to discuss if Cristiano should remain the captain. That's something I want to be very clear about."
