Mateo Kovacic's 90th-minute booking in the Carabao Cup final cost a football fan £6,000 on a bet.

Chelsea took on Liverpool in the final of the Carabao Cup on Sunday, but Thomas Tuchel's side lost out on penalties after a dramatic shoot-out saw Kepa Arrizabalaga miss a penalty to hand Liverpool the win.

Twitter user @BenWalshhh put a £20 bet with odds of 300/1 on the game finishing 0-0 and there being no yellow cards during the opening 90 minutes, and would have won £6,000 if Kovacic had not been booked in the final minutes.

Walsh shared a photo of his bet to his Twitter account and wrote: "Was there really any need @mateokovacic8?"

Fellow football fans were quick to respond and sympathise with Walsh, with one fan claiming they would go round to Kovacic's house and demand the £6,000 they had missed out on from the midfielder.

However, another fan rubbed the salt in Walsh's wound after revealing they had a bet down for a 0-0 scoreline and Kovavic to be shown a card.

They shared a photo of their own bet, adding: "Cashed out the second he got booked. Sorry pal."

Speaking after his penalty miss, Kepa thanked the players and fans for their support.

"To fall and rise," he wrote on Twitter. "Disappointed after big effort during the tournament. "We keep working. Thanks @chelseafc family for your support."
