Bayern Munich hitman, Robert Lewandowski has beaten the likes of footballing icons, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the European Golden Shoe award after netting a record-breaking 41 goals in the Bundesliga this season.

Lewandowski's 90th minute goal in Bayern's 5-2 win over SC Freiburg in their final Bundesliga game of the season, saw the Polish international surpass Gerd Muller's long-standing record of 40 goals set in the 1971-72 season.

The 32-year-old was well ahead Messi who ended the campaign with 30 goals in LaLiga, with the Argentinian finishing as the top goalscorer in Spain to win his eighth Pichichi award while Ronaldo finished with 29 goals to his name - to clinch his maiden Golden Boot award in his third season in the Serie A.

The award is given on a points basis with a player's goals total multiplied by two, 1.5 or one based on the strength of their leagues. Players from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 have their goals total multiplied by two, giving Lewandowski a points tally of 82.

This was the first time that Lewandowski has won the European Golden Shoe in his career, with Messi winning it the most times (6) in the history of the award.
