Raheem Sterling, whose selection in the starting XI was widely ridiculed, scored the winner as England began their Euro 2020 campaign with a 1-0 win over Croatia.

Gareth Southgate named a starting XI that surprised many, but at the end of the match, he had got most of his decisions right.

England started the game strongly, and Phil Foden nearly broke the deadlock in the sixth minute of the match, but his shot bounced off the inside of the post.

Croatia slowly grew into the game, but neither them nor England could find the back of the net before half-time.

Things, though, changed after the break as Sterling put England ahead, firing from close range after receiving a pass from the brilliant Kalvin Philips, who was the best player on the pitch.

England should have scored their second four minutes later, but Harry Kane could not make the contact he would have wanted after Mason Mount delivered a sumptuous cross.

Meanwhile, Croatia had an opportunity to level things but Ante Rebic struck the ball well wide of the target after the it had fallen to him following a blocked shot.

Although England scored only one goal, the Three Lions will be happy with the result as it got their campaign off to a winning start.
