Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly instructed his agent Jorge Mendes to initiate talks with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez over a potential return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo returned to Manchester United last summer after spending more than a decade away following spells with Madrid and Juventus.

The 36-year-old has scored 14 goals in 23 appearances for the Red Devils across competitions, but is reportedly unhappy with the club's position on the Premier League table. United are 19 points off rivals Manchester City and still struggling to nail down a top four spot.

And now, Spanish newspaper El Nacional have claimed that Ronaldo has asked his agent to engineer a move back to Spain in the summer.

The report adds that the Portuguese will look to leave Old Trafford if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League, and he has instructed Mendes to begin negotiations with Madrid and other clubs.

El Nacional have claimed that Ronaldo "misses his days in the capital of Spain" and would be keen on returning to Madrid.

Ronaldo pulled no punches in an explosive interview with Sky Sports earlier this month where he criticised the mentality of his teammates at United.

"Since [Rangnick] arrived, I think in some ways we are better, but he needs time, it's not that easy to change the mentality of players, the way they play, the system and the culture like that. So I believe he's going to do a good job.

"The system is useful, but not if the mentality is not there in the pitch. This is why I say we have a long way to improve because, for me, the most important thing is for you to look at yourself and say: 'I can do better. I can help the team much more.'

"The system, yes, it's important, details make the huge difference at the end of the day but, for me, the most important thing is the mentality, for you to be strong, to help the team, the right mentality, self-taught positives."
