Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a brace in his second Manchester United debut as the Red Devils thrashed Newcastle United 4-1 to go top of the Premier League.

The Portuguese sent the crowd erupting in joy when he tapped home a close-range rebound after Freddie Woodman had spilled the ball at his feet on the stroke of half-time.

Newcastle United pulled one back 11 minutes into the second half, but Ronaldo delivered again on 62 minutes, slamming a shot through the legs of the Newcastle United goalkeeper to give Man Utd the lead again. Bruno Fernandes then scored an absolute stunner from outside the box, and Jesse Lingard capped off a fine team move to strike the fourth and seal the Red Devils victory on the afternoon.

All the headlines will be centered around one man: Cristiano Ronaldo, who received rapturous roars every time he touched the ball. And the 36-year-old shared a lengthy post on Instagram afterwards, sending an emotional message to Man Utd fans.

"My return to Old Trafford was just a brief reminder of why this stadium is known as the Theatre of Dreams," Man Utd's no.7 wrote.

"For me, it has always been a magical place where you can achieve everything you set your mind into.

"Along with all my teammates and with the amazing support that we always get from the stands, we face the road ahead with confidence and optimism that we’ll all be celebrating together in the end.

"Proud to be back at Man. United and playing in the Premier League once again, but above all, happy to help the team!

"Let’s go, Devils!"

Meanwhile, Man Utd occupy the first place in the Premier League table with 10 points - same as Chelsea and what Liverpool and Everton could have at the end of the gameweek - from four games so far this season.
