Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland believes Robert Lewandowski is the best football player in the world right now.
The Bayern Munich hitman missed out on last year Ballon d'Or despite scoring a stunning 69 goals in 59 games in 2021. Instead, Lionel Messi, who scored 34 goals, won the award for a record seventh time.
And Haaland, who has been on fire in front of goal himself, scoring 79 goals in 80 appearances for Dortmund, believes his Bundesliga counterpart should have won the award.
In an interview with ESPN, Haaland was asked to name his top three players in the world football, and said: "That's a good question. I think it was the last year, right?
"I think you have to say Lewandowski number one, and then for me Benzema has also been amazing, but Messi is also outstanding. So Benzema and Messi in shared second and third place."
Lewandowski was the frontrunner to lift the Ballon d'Or back in 2020, only for France Football to cancel the awards ceremony due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, Messi, when collecting his award last year, claimed that the Pole should be awarded the trophy. He said: "I would like to mention Robert Lewandowski, it's been a real honour to compete with you.'Everyone knows and we agree that you were the winner last year.
"I think France Football should award you your 2020 Ballon d'Or - you deserve it and you should have it at home."
