Sevilla star, Ivan Rakitic has revealed that footballing superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo had urged him to join Juventus in the summer of 2019, but the deal was scuppered due to Barcelona asking €50million for his signature.
Rakitic eventually stayed on at the Nou Camp for one more year, post which he returned back to Sevilla for just €1.5m in September 2020. Having played with Lionel Messi, the Croatian was very keen to play with another player who dominated football in Ronaldo - but the move could never happen.
“In the summer of 2019, Cristiano called me personally to suggest I go to Juve. He told me that the club wanted me too, but the transfer didn’t go through. Barcelona were asking for €50m and it was too much," he said as quoted by Football Italia.
“Ronaldo is one of the greatest of all time. You really enjoy watching him and what he’s doing at Juventus.”
The 33-year-old has enjoyed an illustrious career so far, representing the likes of Sevilla and Barcelona, while also playing a key role for Croatia at the international level. He has so far won four LaLiga titles, four Copa del Rey honours, one Europa League and one Champions League and will look to add more honours to his title before he eventually hangs up his boots.
