Brazilian legend Cafu has hailed Lionel Messi for his performance at the Copa America before the start of the ongoing domestic season and stated that the PSG superstar will be the "protagonist" for Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Messi came up with brilliant performances for Argentina throughout the duration of the Copa America and he was a true leader for them in the tournament. He was also the highest goalscorer and assist provider in the competition.

Cafu was asked about the Argentine maestro and as reported by Omnicom Pr Group via Mundo Deportivo, he said, "Messi will always be the protagonist when he plays. Compared to other times, this Argentina team really played for him and that made a difference. There is always pressure on I read for him to perform at his best with Argentina and for others to help bring out the best in him.

"He (Messi) will always assume a leading role when he is on the field and at the next World Cup it will be no different. He continues to perform at such a high level year after year, so he will certainly have a great influence on Scaloni's strategy. He has had an incredible career."

Messi played a total of 630 minutes at the Copa America, scored four goals and assisted five for his teammates.

He scored one penalty, two free-kicks with a conversion rate of 22.22%.

Messi created a total of 21 chances, attempted a total number of 295 passes and completed 239 of them. The Argentine legend scored a goal every 157.5 minutes and provided an assist every 70 minutes throughout the tournament.
