Barcelona are reportedly set to rival Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Atalanta defender, Cristian Romero - though it is being understood that any deal for him would hinge on contract situation surrounding fellow countryman, Lionel Messi.
Tottenham have already agreed a five-year deal with Romero, with reports in Italy claiming that the Premier League outfit had reached an agreement in principle with the 23-year-old, who impressed during Argentina's recent Copa America triumph.
The 23-year-old who played a key role in Argentina's 2021 Copa America title win, has been on Barcelona's radar for sometime, but they may not be able to afford the defender as they look to tie his international team-mate Messi to a new deal.
As per Sportitalia, the Catalan giants have expressed an interest in signing the centre-back, but with Atalanta valuing him at £50million, a deal looks unlikely - especially with Barca needing to offload players in order to facilitate a new long-term contract for their star player in Messi.
However, they might also look at the option of offering some of their surplus players in a swap deal, though they might lose out to Tottenham in the race to sign the player, as Spurs are currently negotiating with the club over the deal.
Tottenham are currently £6.8million (€8m) short of Atalanta's valuation of Romero, and the club management will look to get the deal done as soon as possible, considering that the player has attracted interest from a number of top European clubs.
