Barcelona legend Rivaldo has claimed that signing Sergio Aguero would be a "coup" for Barcelona and added that his arrival might convince Lionel Messi to stay at the club.

Manchester City have confirmed that Aguero will be leaving the club at the end of the current campaign, and the Argentine has been linked with a free transfer to Barcelona. Rivaldo believes getting Aguero on board will be good thing for the LaLiga giants as he hopes Messi can be convinced to extend his contract.

"Signing Aguero on a free transfer could be a coup for Barcelona," Rivaldo said (h/t The Daily Mail). The Brazilian legend added, "He (Aguero) has a good relationship with Lionel Messi and, with Barca missing Luis Suarez this season, Aguero would probably go straight into the starting 11.

Rivaldo concluded, "His arrival could also [help] new club president Joan Laporta persuade Messi to stay at the club. Memphis Depay and possibly Erling Haaland are said to be in conversations with the club. But those players will cost big fees, so [head coach Ronald] Koeman should carefully weigh up the options before rejecting them, especially when we are talking about a player of Kun Aguero's quality."

Messi is in the final three months of his deal at Camp Nou, and any discussion over a potential transfer has been pushed until the end of the season. The six-time Ballon d'Or winner is being targeted by City and Paris Saint-Germain, but new Barca president, Joan Laporta, is hoping to convince the 33-year-old to extend his stay in Spain.
