6 Teams to Have Scored 100+ League Goals in One Season

You'd think if a team has scored 100+ goals in a single season, they'd have won the League without a worry. But that isn't always the case.

However, scoring 100+ goals is an achievement in itself. This season, Manchester City and Barcelona already have 35 and 33 goals to their name - a number that's likely to rise as the season progresses.

They might not reach 100 goals, but here are six teams who have scored 100+ League goals in a single season.

6. Liverpool (101 goals - 2013/14)

In the 2013/14 season, Liverpool enjoyed a memorable season, scoring 101 league goals, the highest number of goals scored by a Premier League runner-up and also the fourth-highest number of goals ever scored by a Premier League club.

Luis Suarez was the club's highest scorer with 31 goals in 33 appearances, winning the Premier League Golden Boot as well as the PFA Player of the Year, while Steven Gerrard finished with the most assists, with 13.

The Reds finished second on the final day, finishing behind Manchester City by only two points. This was the first time they finished inside the top four since 2008-09. This season recorded an all-time high mark of goals scored by Liverpool not only in Premier League season, but in all their English top-flight appearances.

5. Chelsea (103 - 2009/10)

Chelsea ended the league campaign having scored 103 goals, the most in the club's history. They also became the first Premier League side to score 100+ goals in a season and the first team since Tottenham in 1961 to score 100 goals in the top flight.

This was Chelsea's most successful season for they not only managed to retain their Premier League title, they won it for the third time, also retained the FA Cup for the first time, becoming the seventh English club to complete the Double.

Didier Drogba was the highest scorer for the club with 29 goals in 31 appearances. He also won the Golden Boot for his performances.

4. Paris Saint Germain (105 - 2018/19)

The Ligue 1 winners ended the season with 105 goals. Kylian Mbappe was the star of the 2018-19 campaign, netting 33 of PSG’s 105 league goals. He was the only player alongside Lionel Messi to find the net more than 30 times in the domestic championships.

Paris Saint-Germain winning the title again was hardly a surprise but Mbappe's incredible performances overshadowed the speculation surrounding Neymar. No club has been able to match PSG's spending power since the Qatar Sports Investments takeover of 2011, which has transformed them from a top-six side to Ligue 1's superpower.

The previous season too, the French giants a grand total of 108 goals with Edinson Cavani scoring 28.

3. Manchester City (106 - 2017/18)

Manchester City have previously torn up the top-flight record book when it comes to record goal scoring, and the 2017-18 season saw them set a number of Premier League records. This was only their third title win. Sergio Aguero was the top scorer with 21 goals.

The team set a number records during the season, including, most points (100), most away points (50), most wins (32), most away wins (16), most goals (106), best goal difference (+79) and most consecutive victories (18). The team also equalled the record for the earliest Premier League title win (five games to spare), beating every other team in the league throughout the season.

An Amazon Original docuseries of the season titled All or Nothing: Manchester City was released on Amazon Video in August 2018.

2. Barcelona (116 goals - 2016/17)

Barcelona ended the season with 116 goals, setting a new record at the club. Due to the four goals scored in the win over Eibar on the final weekend of the campaign, Luis Enrique’s team moved ahead of the total 115 scored by Tito Vilanova’s side in the 2012/13 season and the 114 from Pep Guardiola’s final season in charge in 2011/12.

Lionel Messi ended the campaign as top scorer not only in La Liga but also in Europe, claiming both the Pichichi and Golden Shoe awards respectively, with a total of 37 goals. Of those 116 goals, 64 were scored at Camp Nou and 52 away from home.

Their biggest win away from home that season came courtesy of the 6-0 win against Alavés in Mendizorrotza.

1. Real Madrid (121 goals - 2011/12)

Despite failing to win the Champions League, Real Madrid finished the 2011-2012 season on a high note. They recorded 100 league points in a single season, scoring 121 goals and recording a +89 goal differential along the way.

They also set a record of 32 wins in total (16 away wins) in the season. On the defensive end, however, Real Madrid's tally of 32 goals conceded was not that impressive and surely had to be improved on.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the winner of the Pichichi Trophy and European Golden Shoe last season, was the team's leading scorer with 46 goals in La Liga and 60 overall.
