Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has claimed that French forward Antoine Griezmann is the best player in the world after the player ran the show in the team's win against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Griezmann scored two goals and provided the assist for the third in the 3-1 win over in their group game match on Wednesday. Simeone has said that Griezmann, who was linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer, is easily the world's number one player.

"I said it last season and I'll say it again - for me Griezmann is the best player in the world," he said, according to Goal.

"He won the Europa League, the World Cup, the [UEFA] Super Cup and finished second in a league in which both Barcelona and Real Madrid are in. He is in the place he wants to be. He chose to stay at Atletico and these are the consequences. He is enjoying a very important moment in his career."

Last season, Atletico had a poor Champions League campaign, when they got knocked out in the group stage, but the team recovered and won the Europa League instead.

Griezmann went on to score four goals in the World Cup to help France win the tournament for the second time in their history.

However, the player was not shortlisted for the FIFA BEST awards and it is unlikely that he would be in contention for the Ballon d'Or either, considering Luka Modric won the Golden Ball award at the World Cup.
