Newly crowned FIFA BEST player Luka Modric has revealed that while Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are on a different level, he deserved to get the award for his performances over the previous season for both club and country.

Modric was part of the Real Madrid team that won the Champions League title for the third time in a row last season, before helping Croatia reach the World Cup finals for the first time in their history and winning the Golden Ball in the process.

The Croatian agreed that Ronaldo and Messi were out of the world but insisted that his performances last season deserved recognition.

"I am happy because other players are recognised, the ones before deserved to win but couldn't do it," Modric said, according to Goal.

"The goals are important, especially players like Cristiano and Messi are apart from this world. They are the two players of the world.

"But other players have to be recognised when they have a good year. I am happy it happened this way and I hope it happens in the future with other midfielders or defenders."

He also said that he had hoped both players would come for the ceremony and that he hasn't spoken with Ronaldo yet.

"Everyone has their own reasons," he said. "Obviously, I would have liked them to be here but they aren't."

"He [Ronaldo] sent me a message the day of the UEFA prize but nothing yet," he added. "I don't have my phone with me now so maybe he has [sent a message]."

"Of course I would change everything to have won in Russia. For me, the team is always more important," he said.

"And I would of course change all my individual trophies for that trophy to be World Cup champions.

"But of course this is also recognition for all the hard work, for the season that I had for Real Madrid and the national team. And for this I am happy that people recognise me as the best for this year."
