Liverpool could be set to leapfrog both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Ivory Coast and Nice star Jean-Michaël Seri, according to reports from France.

The deal, as relayed by TeamTalkis reported to be in the region of £20m, as the Reds close in on one of Ligue 1's standout stars, in the wake of their failure to sign first choice midfield target Naby Keïta.

The RB Leipzig midfielder was one of Jürgen Klopp's summer targets, but a deal this window failed to materialise with last season's Bundesliga runners up being unwilling to entertain offers. Nice, however, are thought to be more comfortable allowing Seri to move for an acceptable offer.

Yet even so, signing Keïta long-term is not thought to be impossible. His £49m release clause comes into effect next summer, and it is widely believed that Liverpool will continue to be in the hunt for the 22-year old Guinean star.

Meanwhile, 26-year-old Seri - who, as well as both North London sides and Liverpool, has been linked with Barcelona - offers a well-rounded midfield presence, and is particularly dangerous in the final third, ranking tied second in France's top tier for assists in 2016/17. To go with his 10 assists, he also scored seven times as Nice qualified for the Champions League.

The Seri transfer could prove to be a bargain move for Klopp's side, with TeamTalk claiming a £20m offer could be enough to land the star whose buyout clause stands at £36.4m.

If completed, the former Paços de Ferreira man would become Liverpool's fourth signing of the summer, after deals for left back Andrew Robertson, former Chelsea youngster Dominic Solanke, and AS Roma star Mohamed Salah.
