3 Key Battles Which Could Decide the Bundesliga Fixture Between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen

The opening Bundesliga fixture is almost upon us as Bayern Munich welcome Bayer Leverkusen to the Allianz Arena on Friday.

Bayern are undoubtedly favourites going into the tie and Leverkusen will have to be at the very top of their game if they are to take something away from Munich.

Here are three key battles which could decide the outcome between the two sides...

1. Robert Lewandowski vs Jonathan Tah

Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski is seemingly never short of form. The Polish striker has scored 77 goals in 88 league appearances for Bayern since his move from Borussia Dortmund.

The 28-year-old has scored three goals in two pre-season games leading up to the weekend clash with Leverkusen and will look to continue his good form by finding the net again.

The man handed the job to try and stop Lewandowski is Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah. The German has strength and power on his side alongside height, which will certainly help in during the aerial duels but the 21-year-old will find the game difficult if Lewandowski hits the ground running from pre-season.

2. Arjen Robben vs Wendell

Arjen Robben is well known for his pace down the right wing and his inevitable cut in onto his favoured left foot. He has been renowned for this through his entire playing career.

However, it's worked well for the Dutchman over the years and defenders have found it more than difficult to stop him - even if they definitively know what he plans to do..

Leverkusen's Brazilian left-back Wendell will come face-to-face with Robben at the weekend and will be trying to stop the 33-year-old cutting in to open up for a shot at goal.

Wendell has pace on his side and youth to boot. The 24-year-old has faced Robben previously and should know exactly what to expect for the 90 minutes.

3. Mats Hummels vs Kevin Volland

Leverkusen front man Kevin Volland is the man with the difficult task of breaking through the Bayern Munich defensive line. The former Hoffenheim forward joined Leverkusen last year and has since managed to score six goals in 23 games for the club.

The 25-year-old has pace and the ability to receive the ball at his feet, holding up the play for his side. He'll be looking to cause trouble for Bayern Munich and he'll hope he can get on the score sheet to open his account for the season.

Bayern Munich centre-back Mats Hummels will be keeping a close eye on Volland as he attempts to prevent forward making any kind of impact on the game. The former Borussia Dortmund man has experience and good reading of the game in his locker - attributes that could prove vital in the battle between the two players.
