Chelsea are set to make a £50m bid for Southampton's wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk in the coming days after a poor start to the season.

The Blues lost the Community Shield to Arsenal last week and started their Premier League campaign with a shock home defeat to Burnley and this has prompted them into action as they look to retain their Premier League crown.

According to the Mirror, the defending champions are poised to make an opening offer of £50m for Van Dijk and hope to beat Liverpool to his signing.

The Dutchman was initially expected to move to Liverpool but the move broke down after Liverpool were accused of tapping up the player.

The report states that Liverpool are still interested in van Dijk but Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and technical director Michael Emenalo are confident that they can make the 26-year-old snub Liverpool for Chelsea.

The Netherlands international put in an official transfer request last week but Southampton are yet to receive any bids for him, though that is expected to change in the next few days.

Chelsea have already signed Antonio Rudiger to strengthen their defence but after the horror show against Burnley, Conte is convinced that another defender is a necessity, with Van Dijk identified as the ideal candidate.

The former Celtic man joined Southampton in the summer of 2015 and has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and will be an excellent addition for Chelsea.
