Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes that his former side must look to sell Philippe Coutinho this summer, with Barcelona looking to sign the player.

The Catalans have had two bids rejected by Liverpool and this has prompted Coutinho to put in a transfer request to leave, despite the club reiterating their stance on not letting him leave.

However, Thompson claims that despite Coutinho's quality, Liverpool must not keep any player who does not want to play for the club and should sell the Brazilian to Barcelona.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, as reported by the Daily Star, Thompson said, “I can see them keeping him. I can see them saying ‘stay here, until we’ve got the player we want to come in’ so they might keep him for 12 months."

He continued, “If you’re asking me my opinion, any player who says they don’t want to play for you, as soon as the transfer request came out, I don’t want players who are not committed."

However, Thompson wants his former club to make the Brazil international 'sweat' before agreeing to the sale.

Thompson continued, “I know it’s Barcelona and I know people will go ‘well that’s the ultimate end game for him’ but I still pride my club and if he doesn’t want to play for them, make it difficult for him but in the end get the best money possible, even on the last day of the transfer window."

"Make him sweat and then take as much as money as they can. That’s the way I feel but the way I see it panning out is that the club will try as much as they can to keep him,” he added.

Coutinho has established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League since joining Liverpool in 2013 and is now likely to move to Barcelona, though Liverpool are adamant that they will not let him leave.
