The calendar year of 2021 recently came to an end and while we are now in the year of 2022, the previous year saw a lot of football being played both internationally and at club level, though there were some players who played more games than the others.

Here, we take a look at five players who played the most amount of games in 2021.

1. Bruno Fernandes (Portugal/Manchester United) - 73 games

Bruno Fernandes has established himself as the talisman at Manchester United and it was the midfielder who was the most busy player in the year gone by as seen by the 73 games he played combined for both Portugal and his club.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a brilliant first half in 2021, though his effectiveness went down a notch or two, following the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford.

He still remains a key player for the Red Devils and it will be interesting to see if he plays the same amount of games this year.

2. Kasper Schmeichel (Denmark/Leicester City) - 72 games

Kasper Schmeichel is without doubt one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and the number one choice for his country, with the 35-year-old still putting on impressive performances at all levels.

The Danish star made 72 appearances across all competitions last year, which just goes to show how important he is for both Leicester City and Denmark.

3. Ruben Dias (Portugal/Manchester City) - 71 games

Ruben Dias completely revolutionised Manchester City's defence after arriving in the summer of 2020, and he continues to remain the rock at the back for the Cityzens.

The 24-year-old made 71 appearances last year and considering that he is still yet to reach his peak, it will be interesting to see if his body holds up as his career progresses.

4. Elif Elmas (North Macedonia/Napoli) - 70 games

A midfielder by trade, Elif Elmas was a regular presence for Napoli and North Macedonia in 2021, making 70 appearances across all competitions, thus living up to all the praise that has come his way.

The 22-year-old was named the Macedonian Footballer of the Year in 2019, while also leading his club to the 2020 Coppa Italia honour.

5. Mason Mount (England/Chelsea) - 70 games

Mason Mount has not looked back ever since breaking into Chelsea's first XI in 2019 and since then he has become a regular presence for both club and country.

The 22-year-old has been tipped for big things in the future, and looking at the games he played in 2021, he will only get better as time goes by.
