A number of football clubs in the world slap release clauses on their top players in order to ensure that they not only keep hold of their stars but also to use them to extract the highest possible amount in terms of transfer if a club comes calling for their signature.

It usually gives the selling club the upper hand in terms of negotiations and here, we take a look at five players with the highest release clauses in the world.

1. Karim Benzema - £846.7m

Karim Benzema recently extended his Real Madrid contract till 2023, with the Los Blancos slapping a €1bn release clause in the Frenchman's deal. There is no doubt that the striker has established himself as the best player at the club ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left them in 2018 and the management did well to hold on to him - considering that he is vital to their chances of winning silverware this season.

2. Antoine Griezmann - £686.4m

Barcelona signed Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid amid huge expectations, but things have not gone to plan for the Frenchman at the Nou Camp.

The 30-year-old has struggled for consistency at Barcelona, managing to score only 35 goals in 101 appearances, with the management understood to be keen to sell him - though nothing has come out of it so far.

3. Federico Valverde - £643.9m

Federico Valverde broke into the Real Madrid squad under Zinedine Zidane in 2019, with the midfielder establishing himself as one of the first names on the team-sheet.

At 23-years-old, Valverde is seen as a player who will remain at the Bernabeu for atleast a decade to come, with reports suggesting that they are looking to tie him down to a bigger contract this summer.

4. Luka Modric - £643.9m

The Croatian is widely considered as one of the greatest midfielders in the history of the sport, and looking at his release clause - it is looking very likely that he will end his career at Madrid.
