The calendar year of 2021 is almost at an end, with the year seeing a number of top performances from players across the world. Africa as a continent has given some of the greatest players in the history of the sport and it is no different at the current point of time.

Here, we take a look at the five best African footballers in 2021.

Mohamed Salah has established himself as arguably the best player in the world at present courtesy of his performances for Liverpool, with the striker literally being unplayable this season.

The Egyptian is without doubt Liverpool's most important player and has scored 22 goals in just 24 appearances in the second half of the year - numbers which are frankly staggering.

2. Edouard Mendy (Senegal/Chelsea)

Chelsea signed Edouard Mendy from Rennes last summer and the goalkeeper was an instant success at Stamford Bridge, playing a key role in their Champions League win.

The 29-year-old equalled the record for most clean sheets in a Champions League season and has continued in the same vein this season by registering 12 clean sheets so far.

3. Riyad Mahrez (Algeria/Manchester City)

Riyad Mahrez took time to settle at Manchester City, but since then he has excelled on the pitch and recently scored his 50th goal for the club in all competitions.

The Algerian who has already scored 11 goals this season, played a key role in the Cityzens league title win and run to the Champions League final in the first half of the year.

4. Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/Paris Saint-Germain)

It may come as a surprise that Achraf Hakimi is just 23-years-old, considering that he has already played for the likes of Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan in the past - winning six trophies so far, including the 2018 Champions League and the 2020/21 Serie A title.

The right-back was an important player of the side that won the Serie A title in the first half of the year while continuing his good form for Paris Saint-Germain following his move in the summer.

5. Sebastien Haller (Ivory Coast/Ajax)

Sebastien Haller struggled at West Ham United, but it is at Ajax where he has shown his full potential scoring a staggering 22 goals for the Dutch giants this season.

The striker became only the second player after Cristiano Ronaldo to score in all six games of the Champions League and became the fastest player to net 10 goals in the competition's history.
