Club football around the world is in full swing, with a number of clubs in the top-five leagues in Europe competing for trophies come the end of the season. Teams who defend well are the ones who are excelling at the moment, and a lot of that credit should go to the goalkeepers - who are unfortunately not given the credit that they deserve.
Here, we take a look at five goalkeepers with most clean sheets in all competitions in the top-five leagues of Europe in 2021.
1. Edouard Mendy (Chelsea) - 19 clean sheets in 32 games
Named the UEFA Champions League goalkeeper of the 2020/21 season, Edouard Mendy has had an immediate impact for Chelsea, with the 29-year-old excelling in goal for the Blues.
Mendy was one of the key reasons why Chelsea won the Champions League last season and will look to continue his form as the 2021/22 season progresses.
2. Ederson (Manchester City) - 19 clean sheets in 35 games
Ederson won the 2020/21 Premier League Golden Glove, playing an instrumental role in Manchester City winning the league title and their run to the Champions League final.
The Brazilian has continued his brilliant form this season too, and it will be interesting to see if he will be able to win the award this time around too.
3. Mike Maignan (AC Milan) - 17 clean sheets in 31 games
Mike Maignan struggled for gametime at Paris Saint-Germain and it was at Lille that he broke through, establishing himself as their number 1 and one of the best goalkeepers in Ligue 1.
The 26-year-old's performances caught the eye of AC Milan, who signed him on a five-year deal with the Frenchman replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal.
4. Yassine Bounou (Sevilla) - 17 clean sheets in 33 games
Yassine Bounou has had a stop start career so far, but he has found stability and success at Sevilla and is their number 1 goalkeeper after initially joining them on loan in 2019.
The 30-year-old who is Moroccan, has also made 29 appearances for them so far.
5. Koen Casteels (Wolfsburg) - 15 clean sheets in 29 games
Koen Casteels has been unlucky not to feature more often for Belgium, considering that he has been brilliant in goal for Wolfsburg for sometime now.
The 29-year-old is behind Thibaut Courtois in the pecking order for Belgium and will look to get more appearances under his kitty in the near future.
