The UEFA Champions League is widely considered to be the biggest and most prestigious club competition in the world, with a number of top teams participating in it in order to win the trophy come the end of the campaign.

While a number of great players have participated in the competition both in the past and at present, some of them despite their achievements have not been the best when it comes to scoring from the penalty spot.

Here, we take a look at four players who have missed the most penalties in Champions League history.

1. Lionel Messi - 5 penalties missed

Widely considered to be the greatest player in the history of the sport, Lionel Messi moved to joint top of the list after being denied by Thibaut Courtois during Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the round of 16 first leg fixture.

Despite this, the Argentina icon is the second highest goalscorer in the competitions history and has four titles to his name, all of them coming during his time with Barcelona.

2. Thierry Henry - 5 penalties missed

Thierry Henry is arguably the greatest foreign player in Premier League history, but he failed to win the Champions League trophy at his peak with Arsenal and needed to move to Barcelona in order to win the European honour.

The Frenchman missed five penalties during his career in the competition, which is joint top on the list along with his former Barcelona team-mate.

Another Premier League and LaLiga legend who failed to win the Champions League trophy during his career was Sergio Aguero, with the Argentinian more successful in the Europa League.

The striker who had to retire due to a heart condition came close to winning the trophy during his time with Manchester City, but it was not to be.

4. Ruud van Nistelrooy - 4 penalties missed

Between 2001 to 2005, there was no better goalscorer in football, with Ruud van Nistelrooy emerging as the top goalscorer in three different Champions League seasons.

The Dutchman unfortunately did not win the trophy during his career despite being extremely prolific for both Manchester United and Real Madrid.
