The Premier League is arguably the most competitive league in the world and without doubt the richest league in the sport, courtesy of the money they get through television revenue and due to the staggering amount of fans that follow the league.

Clubs in England are some of the richest in the sport and hence can attract top players by offering them high wages and salaries. Here, we take a look at the four highest-paid centre-backs in the English top-flight.

1. Raphael Varane (Manchester United) - £340,000-a-week

Manchester United completed one of the best transfers of the 2021 summer transfer window when they managed to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

The Frenchman is widely considered as one of the best centre-backs of his generation, with the player having won everything there is to win in football. He has already adapted to his surroundings in England and despite his high wages, his signing will be considered to be a steal in the future.

2. John Stones (Manchester City) - £250,000-a-week

John Stones was tipped for big things as a teenager, and he has lived up to his billing by becoming a key player for both club and country through his performances.

The England international bounced back from a poor spell in his career, playing a key role in Manchester City's run to the 2020/21 Premier League title.

He is still 27-years-old and his importance to the club was seen by the management tying him up on a new deal till 2026.

3. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) - £220,000-a-week

Virgil van Dijk has established himself as the best centre-back in the world over the past three years or so, and he is a talismanic presence for Liverpool, both in defence and in terms of leadership skills.

The Reds struggles last season was due to his injury enforced absence, and his return this campaign has given both the management and fans a huge shot of confidence.

4. Harry Maguire (Manchester United) - £189,904-a-week

Many were surprised when Manchester United paid a staggering £80million for Harry Maguire, but the England international has more than lived up to his price tag as seen by his performances on the pitch.

The centre-back has become a leader both on and off the field for the Red Devils and is now counted as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
