Football today is become very competitive and the focus tends to be on strikers who get most of the plaudits and honours, though it is not always the strikers who are penalty specialists for their respective teams.

In a lot of teams, their top penalty takers are those who played in midfield and here, we take a look at three players who have scored the most penalties in a single calendar year in Premier League history.

1. Jorginho (Chelsea) - 10 in 2021

Jorginho recently broke the Premier League record for the most penalties scored in a single calendar year, when he netted two from the spot to take his tally to 10 in 2021.

What makes this feat even more impressive is that the Italian has taken 10 penalties for Chelsea this year and has scored on every single occasion for a 100 percent strike rate.

2. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) - 9 in 2014

Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard scored nine penalties in 2014 in a season where the Reds were brilliant in front of goal and were title challengers only for them to slip up at the last minute.

The legendary midfielder was a talismanic presence for the club and it was rather unfortunate that he ended his career without winning a single league title.

3. Matt Le Tissier (Southampton) - 9 in 1994

Nicknamed 'Le God' by the Southampton fans for his brilliance on the field, Matt Le Tissier is one of the best players in Premier League history - with the striker known scoring some extraordinary goals during his career.

The 53-year-old was known for his record from scoring from the penalty spot, converting 47 of the 48 spot-kicks he took, with nine of them coming in 1994.

Like Gerrard, Tissier too failed to win a league title with his beloved Southampton.
