There have been a number of players who have achieved greatness in the sport of football, and while they have gone on to do great things, there are some who remain vastly underrated and do not get the credit they deserve or deserved.

Here, we take a look at five of the most underrated players in the history of the sport.

1. Mousa Dembele

Signed by Tottenham Hotspur from Fulham in 2012, Mousa Dembele went on to become a fan favourite at White Hart Lane with many in the Premier League calling him the most "underrated" midfielder in the world.

The Belgian enjoyed his best years under Mauricio Pochettino, with the midfielder wowing fans with his brilliant work rate, composure on the ball and ability to win the ball back.

Such was his ability that Manchester City star, Kevin De Bruyne revealed that he would make his dream five-a-side team due to his talents on the pitch.

2. Jamie Vardy

Jamie Vardy unfairly does not get the credit he deserves considering that he has achieved legendary status at Leicester City, courtesy of his performances in front of goal for them.

The 35-year-old has already scored 158 goals for the Foxes, leading them to one league title, one FA Cup while also being named the 2015/16 PFA Player of Year.

3. Michael Carrick

When one names the best midfielders in Manchester United's history, Michael Carrick doesn't come to mind and that is unfair on the player as he established himself as one of the best deep-lying midfielders in the Premier League.

The 40-year-old is one of the most decorated players in the history of the league, winning 17 honours during his time at Old Trafford and went on to become a coach at the club post retirement.
