No matter how strong England are entering a major tournament or how well they perform during it, every man and his dog will be fully aware of the Three Lions' route to the final.

Think of all the hours wasted up and down the country in the springs and summers of 2014 and 2016, with folk mapping out England's projected journeys only for Roy Hodgson's dismal outfit to crash out in the group stages and round of 16 respectively.

The Three Lions' group stage performance at Euro 2024 did little to suggest they're primed for a deep run, and they were moments away from a humiliating round of 16 exit at the hands of Slovakia. But they're through, somehow, and here's what their route to the final could look like.

Gareth Southgate's England have done it again. At the 2018 World Cup, they avoided the likes of Brazil, France, Argentina, Portugal, and Uruguay on their way to a semi-final berth, with victories over Colombia and Sweden preceding their defeat to Croatia.

Three years later at Euro 2020, England did have to overcome Germany (a bad one, mind) to kickstart their knockout campaign, but Ukraine and Denmark were a far-cry from the heavy hitters could've faced before they met Italy in the final.

The Three Lions certainly aren't in a position to underestimate anyone, as their round of 16 tie proved, but they've found themselves on the 'right' side of the draw, that's for sure. Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, and Belgium will all be avoided until the final.

After scraping past Slovakia following Jude Bellingham's late heroics and Harry Kane's subsequent header in extra-time, England will now face the impressive Switzerland in the quarter-finals. The Swiss, consistent performers at major tournaments, finished just behind Germany in Group A and made light work of the holders, Italy, in the last 16.

They'll be a big test for this unbalanced and tactically inept England side.

Momentum will certainly be building if England win in Dusseldorf on Saturday, and Southgate's side will face either dark horses Austria, Turkey, Romania or the Netherlands with a place in the final at stake. Out of those, the Dutch have the greatest pedigree, but Austria have doubtlessly been the most impressive at the tournament so far.

As it stands, a deep run appears unlikely from Southgate's side, but the way the draw has fallen has certainly bolstered England's chances - assuming they can fix the litany of issues that plagued their campaign thus far.
