Barcelona are close to completing the signing of Brazilian midfielder Matheus Fernandes from Palmeiras, in a deal worth around €11m.

The 21-year-old joined Palmeiras in 2019, and he has made a great impression since sealing his move from Botafogo. The midfielder broke into the team towards the end of last season, making 11 appearances and scoring one goal for the Verdão

Brazilian sports outlet UOL reports that a deal for Fernandes is close to completion between Barcelona and Palmeiras, with the Catalan giants set to pay an initial €7m, with €4m agreed as potential add-ons.

The midfielder is an exciting prospect for la Blaugrana, and he possesses excellent passing abilities, while also being an accomplished dribbler with the ball. Fernandes has made two appearances for the Brazil Under-20 side, but is yet to be capped at senior level.

Barcelona are keen to strengthen their midfield options, with doubts lingering over the future of Chilean star Arturo Vidal. The 32-year-old has been a peripheral figure this season for the Spanish champions, and he was prepared to leave Camp Nou in search of first-team football.

Vidal could find himself back in the Barça starting eleven in the coming weeks however, as previous coach Ernesto Valverde was sacked on Monday and replaced by Quique Setién. The former Juventus man has 18 months left on his current deal, and the Catalan club may look to cash in on the ageing midfielder in the winter window.

Valverde was relieved of his duties in the Camp Nou dugout after Barcelona's 3-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana earlier this month. The Spanish boss had won the previous two La Liga titles with la Blaugrana, and his side are currently joint-top of the table with rivals Real Madrid

The 55-year-old came under heavy criticism for his team's performances in Europe, having surrendered three-goal leads in their last two Champions League exits.
