Meet 9 New Stars as Germany Name an Inexperienced Confederations Cup Squad

Reigning world champions Germany have named a somewhat experimental squad to represent them at the Confederations Cup in Russia this summer.


The tournament once more serves as a warm-up to the World Cup and pits each continental champion against the world champions and the hosts of the upcoming finals in 2018.


With 28 senior caps to his name, 23-year-old Julian Draxler is the most experienced international player in the new-look German squad, with all the country's biggest senior stars given the summer off as a new generation looks to impress.


Here's a look at nine of the newer names in the 23-man squad...

9. Marvin Plattenhardt (Hertha Berlin)

Age: 25

Position: Left-back

Int'l Caps: 0


Marvin Plattenhardt has managed three goals and three assists from left-back in the Bundesliga this season as part of the Hertha Berlin side that is on course to qualify for the Europa League for the second successive year.

8. Benjamin Henrichs (Bayer Leverkusen)

Age: 20

Position: Full-back (left/right)

Int'l Caps: 1


Versatile defender Benjamin Henrichs has played 36 times for Bayer Leverkusen in all competitions in 2016/17 in what has been his first full season at senior level. He started six Champions League games and was rewarded with an international debut last November.

7. Sandro Wagner (Hoffenheim)

Age: 29

Position: Striker

Int'l Caps: 0


Sandro Wagner has been a journeyman with a less than impressive strike rate most of his career, but has has found his feet at Hoffenheim as he nears his 30th birthday. The one-time Bayern Munich youth prospect is the top scoring German player at Hoffenheim this season.

6. Diego Demme (RB Leipzig)

Age: 25

Position: Defensive midfield

Int'l Caps: 0


Diego Demme has worked his way up from Germany's lower leagues to earn his first chance at international level. The holding midfielder won promotion to the Bundesliga with former club Paderborn back in 2014 and then again with RB Leipzig last season.

5. Leon Goretzka (Schalke)

Age: 22

Position: Central midfield

Int'l Caps: 3


Schalke's Leon Goretzka is a talent that has plenty of people talking this season. The 22-year-old has scored eight times in Bundesliga and Europa League games in 2016/17 and reportedly has the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool on his tail.

4. Kerem Demirbay (Hoffenheim)

Age: 23

Position: Central midfield

Int'l Caps: 0


Midfield creator Kerem Demirbay has helped spearhead Hoffenheim's charge towards a Champions League place next season, contributing 14 combined goals and assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances. He played junior international football for Turkey until 2013.

3. Niklas Sule (Hoffenheim)

Age: 21

Position: Centre-back

Int'l Caps: 1


Niklas Sule is another of Hoffenheim's stars and is seen as one of Germany's top talents for the future. He's been playing in the Bundesliga since the age of 17 and will be a Bayern Munich player as of next season after agreeing a summer transfer back in January.

2. Amin Younes (Ajax)

Age: 23

Position: Winger

Int'l Caps: 0


One of only eight players in the squad that don't play their club football in Germany, Amin Younes has been with Ajax since 2015 when he left Borussia Monchengladbach. More than half his seven goals this season have come in the Europa League, with the Dutch side to contest the final against Manchester United next week.

Position: Striker

Only Robert Lewandowski (30), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (29) and Anthony Modeste (25) have scored more than the 21 Bundesliga goals netted by RB Leipzig's Timo Werner this season. The youngster will be trying his hand at Champions League football in 2017/18.
