Newcastle are planning an ambitious £10m swoop for Liverpool youngster Sheyi Ojo.

The 20-year-old, who has had loan spells at Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers, has made 13 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool since his debut in an FA Cup tie against Exeter City in 2016, scoring once.

The Sun claim Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has directly contacted Reds manager Jurgen Klopp regarding a deal after seeing attempts to sign the England Under-20 international on loan rebuffed.

Instead of signing the youngster on a temporary deal, Benitez is now looking into the prospect of taking Ojo to St James' Park permanently instead as the former Real Madrid and Napoli manager attempts to bolster his squad ahead of Newcastle's first season back in the Premier League.

Championship side Middlesbrough are also said to be keen on the winger, who scored his first goal for Liverpool in an FA Cup replay against Exeter in a 3-0 victory.

Ojo has been on the fringe of Liverpool's first-team squad for a few seasons and Klopp is reportedly willing to let him leave for a decent price, given that Ojo will likely play reserve football unless he leaves this summer.

Newcastle's depth in attack was one of their strong points last season, with Dwight Gayle, Matt Richie, Ayoze Perez and Christian Atsu amongst those chipping in with regular goals in the Championship.

Newcastle have so far brought in Atsu on a permanent deal from Chelsea for £6.2m and Florian Lejeune from Eibar for a further £8.7m.
