Championship side Aston Villa have joined Derby County in the race to sign Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan during this summer's transfer window.

Villa boss Steve Bruce is said to be enthusiastic about signing the Irish international from the Potters, according to the Derby Telegraph, but they will face some competition from fellow Championship club Derby County.

The 33-year-old has been with Stoke since 2008 where he has made 291 appearances for the club and scored five goals. Whelan is known for his tenacious work in the middle of the field, but with Stoke boss Mark Hughes heavily criticised for the lack of young talent in the squad, he could well be leaving the club this summer.

Stoke City v Aston Villa - Premier League

Reports from the Potteries suggest that there has been no official bid from Derby or even an enquiry into the signing - which favours Aston Villa further - but Derby midfielder Will Hughes is rumoured to be leaving Pride Park this summer to join Premier League club Watford and Derby boss Gary Rowett is eyeing Whelan as a possible replacement.

According to reports, Aston Villa have had a £500k bid rejected with the Premier Club looking for at least double that amount. However, Villa owner Tony Xia has not made a second offer due to his growing concerns over the amount that's been spent by the club in the past two season's.

The 33-year-old does remain a first-team player at the bet365 Stadium despite his age but could still be leaving the club this summer with interest in him from other clubs in England growing fast.
