German champions Bayern Munich have officially quashed rumours linking them with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, denoting them simply as a 'fable.'

Ronaldo has been all over the papers in the last couple of weeks. After reports emerged of the Portuguese forward being investigated over tax fraud in Spain, the 32-year-old is now said to be unhappy in the Spanish capital, and is looking for a way out of Madrid.

Predictably, this has caused a huge buzz amongst the media, and Ronaldo is currently being linked with moves around Europe - one of which was Bayern Munich.

But now the German outfit have openly mocked such reports, naming the link as the 'Duck of the Day.' In a statement issued on the club's website, the German's bluntly dismissed the rumour.

"In the last few days, the Italian sporting day "Gazzetta dello Sport" reported that FC Bayern are interested in committing Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

"Subsequently, this rumour was also taken up by numerous German media." The Bavarian club began before quoting their CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

"We are accustomed to speculating intensively on possible inflows and outflows during the transfer period. As a rule, we do not comment on these rumours." He said.

"But now, in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, we want to clarify once and for all that this rumour has no basis and must be referred to the realm of the fable."

That's one team seemingly ruling themselves out of a move for the former Manchester United man. The real question lies over who could actually afford the massive £131m transfer fee for the ageing Ronaldo.

Only three teams are said to have the resources to pull off a signing of that magnitude - Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, and of course, his dearly beloved United.
