Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has sanctioned a £70m bid for Alvaro Morata as the Blues look to scupper Manchester United's pursuit of the Real Madrid striker.

The Mirror have reported that Chelsea are searching for a replacement for Diego Costa, who is on the verge of a return to Atletico Madrid.

Morata has reportedly agreed terms with United, but Abramovich has given the go ahead to join the battle for his signature.

Los Blancos are believed to be reluctant to sell the player for purely a fee, however, and would rather initiate a swap deal should they allow Morata to leave.

The European champions would look to offer both Morata and Keylor Navas to United in exchange for David de Gea, while Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could be part of the demands in a deal with the Premier League champions.

Morata scored 19 goals in 43 appearances for Real Madrid last season, but found his number of starts limited under Zinedine Zidane.

The French coach reportedly wants the 24-year-old to stay at the club, but Morata is desperate for regular game time, which can't be guaranteed at the Bernabeu.

United are still considered favourites to sign Morata as they look to secure a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
