The former Spain international has enjoyed an illustrious career, winning three Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues, one La Liga, two European Championships and a World Cup.

Alonso was a key man at Liverpool during his time at the club between 2004 and 2009, and formed a key midfield partnership with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard, now a youth coach at Liverpool, has sent a video message to Alonso ahead of his retirement. The clip is sure to make Liverpool fans emotional, as football prepares to say farewell to one of it's most talented midfielders of recent times.

In the video, Gerrard called Alonso "probably the most enjoyable partner I've ever had" and the "best passer of a ball I've ever played with".

He also candidly revealed that when Alonso was sold by Liverpool in 2009 it broke his heart.

Alonso is now the third player of the Reds Rafa Benitez generation to retire in the last 12 months, with Gerrard and most recently Dirk Kuyt both announcing their retirements.
