Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

Jurgen Klopp is said to be a huge admirer of the 20-year-old defender, and is very keen on bringing him in to bolster his defence as the Reds look to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

However, Tah is insistent on remaining in Germany with Leverkusen, and claims to be happy at the club.

“I am very happy at Bayer Leverkusen,” Tah told Sport Bild“I don’t want to leave.

"We have reached the last 16 in the Champions League, and if somebody wants to call it a stepping stone, I can only say: You can’t ask for much more."

With the club sat in ninth place on the Bundesliga table, they will have a real fight on their hands qualifying for Europe's top competition next season. Tah is well aware of the challenge that lies ahead, but is adamant the club will be involved in the Champions League again in the next term.

"It's clear that I want to play in the Champions League. We need to play a good Ruckrunde (second half of the season) to reach this goal. I still have the expectation and the conviction that we will play in Europe next season."

Tah has been rather impressive in Leverkusen's shirt, having joined the club from Hamburg in 2015. He has made three appearances for Germany so far, and looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

He is seen as the perfect fit for the Reds, and Klopp will be very disappointed with his stance, if the reports on his targets are correct
