Former Sunderland winger Adam Johnson may have lost his lucrative professional contract and sponsorship deals when he was sentenced to six years in prison for engaging in sexual activity with an underage girl, but the disgraced football is still apparently raking in the cash.

According to the Daily Star, Johnson is earning around £5,000 each week as a result of the property he owns and various other investments that continue to yield profit.

"He earned big money for years and had a good team of financial advisers," a source revealed to the tabloid newspaper.

"He had the big footballer house and the cars but he’s never been really super-flamboyant with his cash. He'll still be an extremely wealthy man when he is freed.’"

It means that Johnson is potentially still earning an estimated £260,000 per year and could have total earnings of more than £1.5m by the time he is released in 2021.

With an existing net worth of around £5m, Johnson is also thought to be currently having a new £2m mansion constructed for his future life on the outside.
