Former Liverpool footballer Rob Jones says it is a "real shame" that starlet Sergi Canos is due to leave the club after it was reported by various sources, including Football Insider, that Canos is set to join Championship side Norwich City in a £2.5m deal.

And ex-Reds full-back Jones took to twitter to express his disappointment at the young Spaniard's departure, tweeting:

Jones has been a part of the coaching staff at Liverpool's youth academy for the past three seasons. The 44-year-old helped nurture Canos' talents after the right-sided winger joined from Barcelona's academy in July 2013.

Canos had been in talks with Liverpool to extend his stay on Merseyside, but contract negotiations between the club and his representatives broke down over wage demands.

Canos is believed to have been holding out for around £10k-per-week - a fee that Liverpool were not willing to entertain.

Liverpool had accepted a bid from Bristol City for the 19-year-old's services earlier in the summer, but Canos is said to have rebuffed that offer in favour of moving to Carrow Road instead.

Canos will now be expected to agree terms before completing the move to become part of Norwich manager Alex Neil's first-team plans with the Canaries.

The Spain Under-19 international enjoyed a season-long loan spell at Brentford throughout the 2015/16 campaign.

He made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Londoners, notching seven goals and five assists as the Griffin Park-based outfit finished the season in ninth position.

Canos was then handed his first-team debut by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on the final day of the 2015/16 season, with the wideman given a nine-minute cameo in the 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion, and showed off a glimpse of his talent during his brief run out.
